5 Tricks to Enjoy Winter...If You're Not A Snow Bunny

If you know me, you'll know that I am a big fan of summer. And not the greatest fan of winter. I try not to get SAD during the cold, gray, gloomy months of December through mid March but alas. It does not come easy for me. I am Olaf at heart. Here are some things I've done in the past few years to not just survive winter, but actually thrive (as much as possible) and enjoy it.

1. Invest in good winter clothing.

Two years ago, I bought some nice winter boots from Target (these are actually the exact ones) and I cannot begin to describe the complete benefit of having my toes and ankles warm all winter long! I have hiked in these boots, walked miles in them, and just hung out in them. They made my life so much better during winter. I also have a good, very warm (maybe a little marshmallow-ey...) winter coat. Add to that my hobo-to-gloves mittens, and I am always warm when I go outside. It's made a huge difference.

2. Spend time outside.

As counterintuitive as it sounds, intentionally spending time outside helps me enjoy winter more. This could be because spending all day inside makes me feel cooped up, and it also probably helps to get some fresh air (and Vitamin D if I'm lucky).

3. Find or start a winter sport.

I didn't grow up skiing, but it's been a fun thing to try. I'm not super good or fast, but I do enjoy it. Going skiing on powder days does help the winter feel more fun.

4. Spend time with people you love.

Time flies when you're having fun, right? Doing game nights with good friends, or getting together for things you like can make the time fly with fun.

5. Exercise.

Whatever you need to do to get your blood pumping, go for it. As I mentioned, this book Spark has been so interesting. But everyone knows (but not everyone follows) the fact that regular, cardio about 20-60 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week will do wonders for your mind, waistline, and mood. I am in such a better mood when I exercise regularly, especially when I do HIIT workouts.
